👁️ Overview
PAW Climate is the world's first conference on private-sector applications of ML in climate - in other words, commercial ML-based climate tech.
The goal of the conference is to draw climate-concerned software and ML professionals into climate tech, by showing them that the field is full of incredible work and exciting commercial opportunities.
A co-founder of Work on Climate (Eugene Kirpichov) founded the conference as part of the Predictive Analytics World conference series, and two online PAW Climate events were held in May-June 2021:
- An international event (chaired by Eugene Kirpichov with David Rolnick and Sasha Luccioni) - this event was narrowly focused on ML deployed in production by organizations that see addressing climate change as their primary mission; almost all participating organization are commercial businesses. As such, it gives a direct answer to the question "Where can an industry ML engineer go to work on climate change?"
- A Europe-focused event (chaired by Martin Szugat with Christian Spindler as moderator) - this event was more broadly scoped, and included more overview talks, research work, public-sector work, and some organizations that do work of relevance to the climate domain without the requirement to have climate change as their primary mission.
It is critically important to raise awareness of the climate tech work landscape, so we have chosen to distribute all conference videos and slides publicly for free. Please enjoy, and send a link to your coworkers and other climate-concerned people you know!
A list of climate tech ML companies
While looking for speakers for the conference, Eugene assembled this list: Climate Tech ML companies. The list is, of course, incomplete (new companies seem to appear every few days), but community-authored - please feel free to use it as a starting point in your job search in climate/ML, and help enrich the list if you find it useful!
📹 Full playlist with recordings and slides
You can find the **full playlist with videos and slides** on the Work on Climate YouTube channel. It contains 20 videos, some of which (the PAW Climate EU "expert rounds") contain several talks.
Below are some highlights from each talk that stood out to the organizers.
🤔 It's a lot! What do I do with all this?
Great question! Here are some ideas:
- Get hyped up - Start with the PWC "State of climate tech 2020" report, at least the executive summary, or Eugene's motivational PAW Climate EU keynote (below). Talk to people about it.
- Apply to jobs - if you're serious about looking for climate work, almost all of the speaker companies are hiring! Look at Climate Tech ML companies too.
- Host a viewing party at your workplace, watch and discuss the videos together with your coworkers. Maybe just one video, maybe the whole playlist.
- Talk about it on your favorite climate-concerned mailing list, on LinkedIn, or somewhere else where it's likely to find software/ML folks who want to work on climate. Do it for the sake of finding a buddy: http://workonclimate.org/ started when two Googlers discovered that they both cared about climate, and we've met many people with the same story.
