I’m new. What is a Regenerative Economy?

A Regenerative Economy is one where all economic activity strengthens the health of natural, human, and economic systems it depends on.

This is in contrast to today’s economic paradigm, where most activity centers around extracting value from these systems even at the cost of permanently damaging them.

A regenerative economy is analogous to how a living system (a body or a forest) works. Living systems evolve to a state where all activity of the parts contributes to the health of the whole.

The concept was formalized(*) in 2015 by John Fullerton in a seminal paper “Regenerative Capitalism” and is rapidly gaining traction now. It is commonly characterized by 8 regenerative principles, which you can learn about in more detail here.

() Formalized, rather than invented. Human societies have had regenerative economies for millenia — the extractive economy of today is only a few centuries old. Our objective should be to build a regenerative economy powered with the best tools of today.*
